The Bureau of Land Management White River Field Office will host an in-person public hearing on Thursday to receive comments on a plan to conduct helicopter roundups on wild horses in western Colorado.
While there are no wild burros in Colorado, the BLM estimates the Western Slope to have more than 2,000 wild horses. The Bureau wants to reduce that number to about 800.
Legal Letter: Halt the McCullough Peaks Roundup
On Friday, January 26 2024, American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) sent a legal letter to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with an urgent appeal to halt the ongoing McCullough Peaks bait trap Roundup. This roundup, which began November 1, 2023 and is set to run through March, 2024, sparks major concerns for the genetic diversity of the herds, their population numbers, and the impact of a winter gather on foals and elders.
2024 Black Mountain Burro Roundup Report
On January 9th, 2024, the Bureau of Land Management began a helicopter roundup and removal of Arizona's Black Mountain wild burros. The federal agency is contracting Cattoor Livestock to capture and remove up to 1,000 wild burros.
East Pershing Complex Roundup
On December 28, 2023, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began a wild horse helicopter roundup in the East Pershing Complex located in northwestern Nevada. The complex is composed of 3 HMAs (Augusta Mountains HMA, North Stillwater HMA, and Tobin Range HMA) and 4 HAs (Augusta Mountains HA, East Range HA, Humboldt HA, Sonoma Range HA) and contains a mixture of public and private land. It crosses three BLM districts: Winnemucca, Carson City, and Battle Mountain.
